Engaging with Your Dental Community

The Importance of Engaging with Your Dental Community

Sep 19, 2024 by Gabrielle Jackson, DDS - DCDS Member
As dentists, we play a vital role in our communities, providing essential oral healthcare services to our neighbors, colleagues, family and friends. In addition to our day-to-day responsibilities at our practice, we have to remember that our practices are essential pillars of the community and play a crucial role in its overall well-being.

Have you ever thought about the powerful impact that actively engaging with your community can have? Understanding the depth of this role can help you build stronger connections fostering a sense of belonging and trust. When patients see their dentist actively involved in community outreach, it reinforces the perception that your practice is genuinely invested in their welfare. At any given moment, there are almost certainly people in your area who are new and looking to establish care, or who are dissatisfied with their current dentist and want to find a new provider.  Participation in community events can significantly increase your dental practices visibility among potential patients, can help facilitate referral relationships with local colleagues and demonstrates your commitment to social responsibility.

In addition to an enhanced reputation and sustainable growth, when your dental team is included, you can bring fulfillment and an overall morale boost as these events can often double as team-building exercises.

So what are some practical ways to get involved? Start by identifying local causes or organizations like DCDS Foundation, that resonate with your practice's values and mission. Choosing causes that align will make your efforts more genuine and impactful. There are plenty of local volunteering and foundation events available through existing community organizations that are already involved in charitable work for you to take advantage of. You can consider offering free dental screenings or oral hygiene lecture at local schools, community centers, or shelters.

Sponsoring local events or sports teams can be an excellent way to show your support for the community. It also puts your practice's name in front of a broader audience. When you sponsor or participate in fundraising events, these community connections can be posted to your website and social media pages. Brainstorm with your team to find out what they would like to participate in most.

Start small and keep it going, consistency is key. Nurturing your connections over time will maintain and strengthen your network and community impact!
